FRIM, JMG to cooperate in the ex-mining land restoration

18 August 2020 (Tuesday) – Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG) to collaborate in the greening and restoration research on ex-tin mining sites at the ‘Stesen Ujian Galian’ (SUGA), Malim Nawar, Perak.

At the ceremony held yesterday at FRIM, Director General (DG) Datuk Dr Abd Latif Mohmod represented FRIM while JMG by its DG Datuk Shahar Effendi Abdullah Azizi, in signing the MOU.

FRIM Forestry Biotechnology Director Dr Norwati Mohamad and JMG Mineral Research Centre Senior Director Dr Nazwin Ahmad also served as witnesses of the MOU.

Also present, FRIM Deputy DG (Operations) Dr Khali Aziz Hamzah, FRIM Deputy DG (Research) Dato’ Dr Marzalina Mansor, FRIM Tree Improvement Programme Head Dr Mohd Zaki Abdullah, JMG Silica Based Technology Branch Head Mohamad Haniza Mahmud and JMG Planning and Management Branch Head Zamri Ramli.

The collaboration includes R&D activities in tree planting methods and selection of suitable plant species as well as addressing issues of pollutants at the ex-tin mining sites.
