COLOURS OF FRIM

Flushing Perah

During the week of 29th January 2012, Elateriospermum tapos or Perah tree flushes new leaves. The red coloured young leaves stand out among the greens. This wonderful view can be seen as one enters the road towards building D15 and on the way to the canopy walkway. The flushing Perah trees can also be seen sporadically, from the main road especially near Jalan Jelutong junction, facing to the left when coming from the entrance of FRIM. The flushing is expected to last until Feb 4th 2012.

Perah is distributed within Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. Belonging to the family Euphorbiaceae (rubber tree family), it has white sticky latex in bark, leaves and fruit stalks. The seeds of Perah is edible, but need to be cooked carefully. In the east coast, Perah seeds are pickled as delicacies.
